by Barbara Jacques July 06, 2018

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Know that your body is a temple for your baby, and you my dear are fabulous! While this is a special time bringing new life into the world, your body will go through some unexpected changes you may or may not be aware of. Your skin may start to change and you'll experience sensitivity and irritation. Since you are growing a beautiful life inside you, using certain products may be a no-no as the may be harmful it has long-term effects. Below we go over 7 beauty tips that will protect your skin and benefit the health of both you and your growing baby.

  1. Avoid skincare products that contain harmful ingredients

  • Retin A/Retinoids/Retin/Retinol: lacks a proven track record as a good acne treatment for pregnant women. These acne treatment ingredients can be absorbed into the bloodstream and passed to your baby known to cause birth defects if consumed in the first trimester.
  • Formaldehyde: found in nail polish and used as a preservative in skincare products. Link to increasing infertility.
  • Hydroquinone:  cause birth defects, low birth weights, and stillbirth in animals. Commonly found in skin-lightening treatments and strong acne treatments. Just not safe at all, especially during pregnancy.
  • Tetracycline: an antibiotic used to treat acne, and rosacea. Research suggests it can have toxic effects on the skeletal formation, discoloration of fetal teeth and more.

  1. Moisturize, Moisturize and Moisturize.

When your skin gets dry your belly starts to itch, a lot. As your stomach, breast, thighs, hips, and arms expand the itchier that part of your skin becomes. If you scratch it, stretch marks can form. It's best to apply a moisturizer to help alleviate the itchiness. Always keep a skin moisturizer with you wherever you go, in your bathroom, and by your bedside.

Invest in a moisturizing body soap such as our Wild Hibiscus & Carrot Cleansing Bar that will not strip skin of its natural oils and will feed not only your belly but also breasts, arms, thighs, and hips the nutrients it needs and keep stretch marks at bay. This bar contains:

  • Organic Carrots: the beta-carotene it contains converts into vitamin A which is great for healthy skin, immune system, and vision.
  • Organic Rice Milk: naturally lightens dark scars or spots and locks in the moisture your skin needs to eliminate excess oil secretion.
  • Aloe Vera: contains two hormones with anti-inflammatory properties that reduce skin inflammation.
  • NO ESSENTIAL OILS, so it won't irritate your senses.

“I've been using this on my face and neck twice daily along with the toner and serum for 5 days now. Before the left side of my face the skin tone was uneven with huge pores and blemishes, now I have a glow and it's a lot smoother! I'll definitely order more! I just ordered the mask and face cleanser, I can't wait to try them!” -LaKandra T. (Verified Buyer)

  1. Change Up Your Skin Care Routine

Let’s face it, acne produced by hormones during pregnancy is inevitable! The surge of hormones developing in your body due to hormonal changes and your growing fetus. Minimize the use of heavy makeup that will clog pores, irritate skin and cause more breakouts.

During pregnancy, your skin may sometimes be extremely sensitive and sensitive to fragrances your favorite products may no longer work the same or maybe irritating to both skin and senses. Stay on your slay game and create a facial skin care routine that works for your pregnancy that can aid in giving you that healthy ultimate beauty glow.

A skincare routine isn’t just washing and cleansing your face daily, it’s also about giving your skin the nourishing and hydrating vitamins, peptides and Omega fatty acids it needs to heal and prevent breakouts in the future with Skin Boosters.

Add The Protector: Our Bio-Vitamin Booster formulated for sensitive skin and adding this to cleanser or moisturizer. It doesn't contain essential oils so it won't irritate skin or senses.

This infusion blend contains bio-active plant nutrients, vitamins A, D and amino acids to calm and soothe skin.

  1. Embrace The Changes

A shift in your hormones and changes in your body may result in pigmentation in your skin causing hyperpigmentation, hypo-pigmentation, and moles. This can occur in the most surprising places, behind your neck, on your belly, however; commonly occurs on the forehead and cheeks which is why we recommend you use our Balancing Face Serum in your skincare routine. It contains Ferulic Acid known to treat sun damage and reverse signs of aging & Rosehip Seed Oil known to naturally brighten skin and help combat uneven skin tone and fine lines.

  1. Get Plenty of Rest

Resting does more good than you think! Did you know resting helps ease pressure off your cervix which stays closed during your pregnancy to protect your baby from infection? It also increases the circulation of nutrients your body needs to provide for your baby. Listen to your body when you feel fatigued or exhausted.

  1. Go Walking

Keep your body moving to stimulate blood flow, and increase delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the baby. Walking also brings fresh air into the lungs and helps regulate stress levels, stretches muscles and stay flexible.

Keep a consistent steady schedule that does not put a strain on your belly especially in the first trimester and fourth trimester. Make it encouraging and fun by inviting a friend with you or joining a local pregnancy group. Plus, this gives you time to connect with nature, be present and bond your bundle of joy.
